Cassettes and radio and punk and skate ramps and stuff
October 31st, 2008
So, as I sift through long lists of email contacts, working out the ins and outs of getting a few reviews and some indy radio play with my new record, I started thinking about the older days. Way back. Anyone remember staying up WAY too late because that was when the local college radio station would play the really good stuff?? Yeah, I definitely remember that.
I’d be under a fort of sheets held up by my upturned mattress, my two different-color Converse at the fort door. My skateboard right next to them. 11 pm on (I think) Monday nights. That was when Conn College would play punk. The GOOD stuff. The faster the better. Jello Biafra had just started doing the ‘Spoken Word’ tours he did for years. Bands like 7 Seconds, Big Black, The Wet Ones, Minor Threat and so many others, owned that station for an hour. And that radio station owned my ears and full attention…at least for an hour. Of course I taped every second, even the horrible commercials done by green DJs.
I can still remember a public service announcement…”AIDS is not transmitted by mosquitoes.” That was growing up. It was awesome. I’d bring those tapes over to my best friend’s house; he had the best skate ramp. We’d blast the tapes and launch off this ramp for hours, trying to get that one picture…we never landed any of the airs
Hasoi was my favorite skater. I guess The Dead Kennedys was my favorite band. I knew all the lyrics….”Dear Abby, got a problem…” I think I still know them all.
Happy Halloween to everyone!
